Sudip Bhattacharyya
Visiting Scientist
Dr. Sudip Bhattacharyya is a Professor of astrophysics at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, India, and is a Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA. He is also the current PI of the Soft X-ray Telescope aboard AstroSat, the first multiwavelength Indian astronomy satellite. He primarily works on extremely compact cosmic objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, as well as X-ray astronomy.
Dr. Bhattacharyya has published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers in reputable international journals, edited a book on millisecond pulsars, and written book chapters, including those on philosophy and history of Zero. He has taught several graduate courses and mentored more than 30 M.Sc. and Ph.D students, as well as several postdoctoral fellows, for their research. He has delivered numerous invited scholarly talks, primarily on astrophysics, but also on philosophy and zero. Before joining TIFR, he was a Research Associate at the University of Maryland at College Park and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the USA. He received a NASA Space Science Achievement Award (2007) and a Fulbright-Nehru Academic & Professional Excellence Award (Research; 2024-2025).
