Public engagement
Our scientists care passionately about engaging with communities across the spectrum of education and the public to share the ‘gateway science' of astronomy.
Our scientists understand the need to make science more approachable and relatable so the public recognizes astronomy and astrophysics not as esoteric academic subjects, but instead a disciplined and systematic method to demystify and understand the universe, our Earth’s place within it, and the people who study it.
MKI has several public engagement efforts and is actively developing programs to broaden audience reach with the intent of increasing both breadth and depth of engagement with schools, educators, and the general public.
Mission
Articulate the societal value of scientific inquiry
We are privileged to live in a country that values scientific exploration of the universe as part of our shared humanity and supports careers dedicated to seeking this knowledge. We have an obligation to communicate the role of science and human ingenuity in unraveling the origins of the universe and to show how rigorous scientific inquiry helps advance our understanding of its secrets.
Practice inclusive community engagement
We value the perspectives that a diverse STEM workforce brings to decision making and acknowledge that existing pathways to nurture future scientists have not fostered the trust needed to attract talent from all communities. MKI is committed to developing a strategic approach to public engagement to reach a broader audience and better understand how such diversity will inform our work in building a framework of shared values.
Advocate and train workforce in effective engagement
We view engagement with communities outside of academia as a significant component of professional development for our early-career colleagues. A strategic public engagement plan helps better align the work of our researchers with the expectations of society and funding agencies. Training our junior colleagues will also help bring these values and practices to their future institutions.
