Below are resources of interest and answers to some of the questions we receive most often about our public engagement programs.
Let us know what you are interested in using our request form. We try to fulfill as many requests as possible, but keep in mind that our ability to run programs depends on the availability of our scientist volunteers. If we are unable to fulfill your request, we encourage you to attend any of the public outreach events listed on our website.
The MKI events page has the latest information about upcoming public programs featuring MKI researchers. Filter by “Public Outreach Events” to see the events that are open to people beyond the MIT community.
This is not a comprehensive list, but check out the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (Cambridge), BU Astronomy (Boston), Whitin Observatory (Wellesley), the Christa McAuliffe Center for Integrated Learning (Framingham), and of course the Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Science (Boston). Many other organizations host astronomy-related events as part of their larger STEM outreach efforts.
The MIT Outreach Directory has information about a wide range of programs hosted by various groups around campus. This includes both on- and off-campus learning opportunities.
The MIT Museum offers a student workshop all about exoplanets.
If you are a high school student or under the age of 18 and interested in research internships in astrophysics or space science, MIT hosts a number of established programs with annual application cycles with an open and advertised selection process. If you are selected for such a program, many MKI researchers would welcome the opportunity to serve as your mentor. Outside of these programs, MKI policy forbids faculty and staff researchers from ad-hoc hiring of individual minors, whether in a paid or unpaid capacity, in-person or remotely. The MIT Kavli Institute is an interdisciplinary research center and hosts the research of graduate students from a number of MIT departments including Physics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Aeronautics/Astronautics, and Mechanical Engineering.
An undergraduate degree in physics at MIT provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in physics and related fields.
