MKI is committed to advancing public engagement as a core responsibility of the scientific endeavor. Our signature outreach programs leverage the excitement of astrophysics and space science to strengthen the role for science in society, broaden participation in STEM, and support public engagement by scientists.

Starlab portable planetarium

Our inflatable 6-meter dome offers an immersive view of the night sky and opportunities to hear directly from scientists about their experience in the world of astrophysics and space science. Current show topics include gravitational waves, exoplanets, aurora, and astrophysics in the night sky, all developed by MKI researchers.

Artist in Residence

MKI is engaging an artist-in-residence who will use visual media art to tell an immersive, multisensory story about the science done at MKI. Our inaugural residency kicks off this fall; stay tuned for more details!

Laboratory tours

MKI researchers invite groups of teens and adults to visit the laboratories where space science and engineering is pushing the boundaries of what we can discover in the universe. Recent tours include MKI’s x-ray optics lab, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) Science Office, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) lab, telescope instrumentation labs, and others. All programs and facilities subject to tour guide availability.

Community events

MKI scientists run hands-on activities and demonstrations and present at local events designed to engage the public in the excitement of STEM.

Guest presentations

MKI scientists can speak to your club, school, or community group. Sometimes we even give virtual talks! All programs subject to researcher availability.
