Robert Simcoe
Professor, Director MIT Kavli Institute
Rob is a member of the Physics faculty and was appointed as MKI Director in winter of 2019. As Director, he aligns the organization’s scientific initiatives with its strategic priorities, ensuring that research objectives and institutional goals move forward in tandem. As a point of connection between MKI’s scientific and administrative staff, he facilitates communication and collaboration across these essential functions. Additionally, the Director serves on Physics Council and Science Council, acting as MKI’s formal connection to the Department of Physics, the School of Science Dean’s Office, and MIT’s senior leadership.
Robs’ research interests include:
- Spectroscopy of matter in the early universe to search for signatures of the First Stars
- Physics of diffuse matter at the interface between galaxies and intergalactic space
- Explosive astrophysical transients, especially those associated with gravitational wave events
- Design and construction of astronomical telescopes and instrumentation
